Paediatric cardio-thoracic program
April/May 2007 saw Clin-Ed compiling and implementing a 6 week in-service training program for SKMC. The program was designed to coincide with the commencement of the paediatric cardiac surgery program at the hospital.
Course components included:
- Haemodynamic monitoring
- ECG rhythm strip analysis
- Paediatric cardio-thoracic surgery
17 staff members completed both the theoretical and clinical components of the program. Nursing staff confidence in this new discipline was noticeably improved despite the complex nature of the management of these young patients.
Adult cardio-thoracic program
September/October 2007 saw Clin-Ed back at SKMC for a 7 week period. The adult cardiac surgery program had already been running for just over a year but it was felt the staff would benefit from an Intensive Update Program.
Course components included:
- Mechanical ventilation
- Arterial blood gas analysis
- 12 lead ECG analysis
- Adult cardio-thoracic surgery
31 staff members completed both the theoretical and clinical components of this program and it was deemed a resounding success.
